Our mission is to unlock the full potential of seaweed, especially giant kelp and sugar kelp, as scalable, regenerative crops that feed people, protect ecosystems, and fuel a more sustainable planet.

The Science: Genomics in Kelp Breeding

We are building the genomic foundation for a resilient, profitable, and sustainable kelp farming industry. By combining decades of marine biology expertise with modern bioinformatics, our work is setting new standards for aquaculture innovation. Our patented non-reproductive kelp technology, seed banks, and high-yield cultivars are helping farmers boost production, lower costs, and expand kelp farming into new ocean spaces while protecting local ecosystems.

At the core of MacroBreed's innovation is science-driven kelp breeding. Our team leads the field in:

• Genome Assembly & Annotation: We've published and curated reference genomes for Macrocystis pyrifera (giant kelp) and Saccharina latissima (sugar kelp), available on platforms like JGI PhycoCosm.
• Genomic Selection: We identify optimal breeding lines using statistical modeling and genome-wide association studies, shortening domestication cycles and improving trait targeting.
• Non-Reproductive Kelp: Using high-impact mutations in genes essential for reproduction, we've developed kelp strains that do not produce spores—opening new regions for safe and scalable kelp farming.
• Seed Banks & Clonal Propagation: We maintain diverse kelp seed banks and propagate select gametophytes clonally to preserve genetic diversity and produce uniform, high-yield crops.
